Week Three Prompt

Week Three Prompt:

Hello all! I feel slightly better today, for those of you keeping track. I have stopped laying on the couch snoozing through old episodes of Futurama - at least for now. I thought I would go ahead and post this week's prompt response during this window of lucidity.

So two things this week- first, I would like you to use Novelist. Answer the following questions using Novelist as much as you can - just to familiarize yourself with it if you aren't already using it. Again, email me if your public library doesn't have access to it. Explain why you chose the books you did.

  1. I am looking for a book by Laurell K. Hamilton. I just read the third book in the Anita Blake series and I can’t figure out which one comes next!
  2. What have I read recently? Well, I just finished this great book by Barbara Kingsolver, Prodigal Summer. I really liked the way it was written, you know, the way she used language. I wouldn't mind something a bit faster paced though.
  3. I like reading books set in different countries. I just read one set in China, could you help me find one set in Japan? No, not modern – historical. I like it when the author describes it so much it feels like I was there!
  4. I read this great mystery by Elizabeth George called Well-Schooled in Murder and I loved it. Then my dentist said that if I liked mysteries I would probably like John Sandford, but boy was he creepy I couldn't finish it! Do you have any suggestions?
  5. My husband has really gotten into zombies lately. He’s already read The Walking Dead and World War Z, is there anything else you can recommend?
Second, after you get a chance to do the readings and explore Mary Chelton's list of tools, I want to hear about how you find books to read. It could be a site or a resource you've just discovered or one you've used for years, one you use for yourself or for your patrons or family and friends.

Personally, I use Novelist for work, and for family and friends if they ask me, but for myself I generally find books I want to read in magazines like Locus or Library Journal, also on websites like EarlyWord or through author websites or blogs.

I look forward to reading your prompts! Any questions get in touch with me however is easiest for you. Thanks!

  2. I have a few questions about the semester and assignments. IN this week's assignment you mention: See Appendix B for Read-a-like websites, share your favorites on your blog. What does this refer to? Also, for one of my genres I chose Literary Fiction but I don't see it as a category for annotations on the syllabus, so I guess I need to change it? Do I do the annotation during Historical Fiction week?

  3. I posted my prompt but I think I went way too detailed in posting. Is that okay or do I need to shorten it?

    1. Hi Nicole,

It is probably fine. I will take a look and let you know.

    2. If you take a look at the assignements doc I posted in week one, I suggested that prompts be between 500 - 1000 words - and yours looks right in there, so no worries!

  4. Hi Jillian,
Literary Fiction wasn't technically one of the choices but I told people who were interested in it that they could present it during the week we talk about book awards, I believe week 12. I'm not sure I understand your other question. Are you wondering about where Appendix B is? It's at the end of the syllabus. It's pretty much just asking you to do the same thing I asked you to do for part of this week's prompt.

  5. All right...I promise I won't be too paranoid this entire semester, but I'm wondering again if I did my assignment correctly. Argh. I didn't explain HOW I found the answers on NoveList, I treated it more like a reader's advisory and talked to you. Do I need to be more specific? Thanks!

  6. Hello, I know the annotation is suppose to be 500 or less but can we be a little over ( had to do some editing, think I got down to around 570. Liked the book and topic too much.) Also, for the read-a-likes, do they need descriptions?

    1. Hey Nicole,
I actually said 500-100 words - but I really just put that in there because people always ask - I don't really count the words. As long as your post has everything it needs I don't care about the length. Glad that you liked your book so well! You don't need to do read-a-like descriptions, but you can if you want. Great questions!
